Compare and contrast examples of portraits I. Investigate processes used by different artists to create art I. Discuss how science and technology has influenced the creation of portraits II. Control materials, tools, techniques and processes while creating art II. Take an idea thru planning, reflecting and revision process II. Create realistic portraits in a specific media using correct feature placement III. Identify and discuss characteristics and contexts of works of art III. Use arts vocabulary when talking or writing about art III. Determine distinguishing characteristics of portraits IV. Explain why people create art IV. Discover how an artist's beliefs and emotions are reflected in art forms and style. IV. Identify elements of portraiture Evaluate personal art work in line with the grade focus using supporting examples PROCEDURE: The teacher will: * Begin with a pretest- students receive a sheet with an oval and they are to complete the face with listed features. No further directions are given. 1. Motivate students by playing a CD recording of "Mona Lisa" Initiate discussion of the similarities in photos and prints of portraits created in a variety of media. The portraits span the ages. 2. Introduce appropriate vocabulary, (portraits, Da Vinci, Mona Lisa, Stuart, George Washington, etc. Specific artists and prints depend on choice for that grade level) and older students use note sheets to record their ideas. 3. Note not only feature placement, but also, clues to the subject of the painting. Students discuss background, clothing, expression and conjecture as to the 'story' of the person. 4. Guide students to plan, create and revise a portrait, then reflect on it as a successful piece of art. *Conclude by giving a post test using the same handout and requiring the same listed features MATERIALS: Reproductions, map, music- recording of Mona Lisa, notesheets, pre and post tests, grade appropriate media EVALUATION: Did students: Intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas? Use materials appropriately, complete steps in the forming process with understanding? Employ organizational structures and analyze what makes them effective or not in the communication of ideas? Compare the characteristics of 2 or more art forms that share similar matter? Compare multiple purposes for creating works of art? Reflect on and assess the characteristics and merits of their work?
