Value the nature and meaning of the arts. OBJECTIVES: As a result of this lesson the students will : I. Recognize ways that the world around us influences artistic creation II. Control materials, tools, techniques and processes while creating art II. Take an idea thru planning, reflecting and revision process III. Identify and discuss characteristics and contexts of works of art III. Use arts vocabulary when talking or writing about. art IV. Explain why people create art IV. Discover how people’s feelings are reflected in art forms and styles. Evaluate personal art work in line with the grade focus using supporting examples PROCEDURE: The teacher will: 1. Ask students to recall the elements that are found in all art, using a fine art print, their personal art work and a teaching poster from the classroom for comparison. 2. Ask them if they were allowed to paint but only able to use 3 colors- which colors would they choose? Have them give reasons for their answers. (Most choose their favorite colors, but some will give other interesting rational for their choices.) 3. Explain that there are 3 colors that exist that would provide them with endless choices of colors. Introduce the Primary Colors. Use the overhead projector, and 3 petri dishes filled with water. As you say “red”, add red food coloring. Do the same with yellow and blue. Make sure the 3 colors are displayed in the correct order with yellow at the top, red on the left and blue on the right. 4. Introduce the Color Wheel as a tool that they will use for art and if it is to be effective it must be made correctly. Ask students to take out the primary color crayons, markers or colored pencils so they can complete their own wheel properly. At the overhead add 3 more petri dishes- empty, in the spaces between the Primary colors so it looks just like their sheet. 5. Call on students to come to the overhead and combine primary colors in order to complete the color wheel. 6. Grades K-2: Concentrate on the Secondary colors. Teach the Primary Color song. Complete grade level activities that demonstrate the combination of Primary colors in order to create Secondardy colors. Grade 3: Use Picasso’s Mother and Child and The Tragedy to initiate a discussion on how colors can communicate feeling. Group colors into cool and warm colors. Create collage of cool color snowflakes. Grade 4: Focus on the Complementary colors and their use. Grade 5: Using the same Picasso prints as Gr. 3, develope an awareness of Tints and Tones and how they are created. Practice color mixing with students before using this knowledge to create a landscape. Grade 6: Create color wheel only at this point. Review cool and warm colors, complements and tints and tones 8. Guide students to plan, create and revise an art work, then reflect on it as a successful piece of art. Use materials appropriately, complete steps in the forming process with understanding? Employ organizational structures and analyze what makes them effective or not in the communication of ideas? Compare the characteristics of 2 or more art forms that share similar matter and/or cultural context? Compare multiple purposes for creating works of art? Reflect on and assess the characteristics and merits of their work?
