Compare and contrasts traditions and conventions of two cultures I. Investigate processes used by Abor. culture to create art I. Discover how art forms have been transmitted from one generation to another II. Control materials, tools, techniques and processes while creating art II. Take an idea thru planning, reflecting and revision process II. Create works using original ideas and procedures borrowed from Abor. culture III. Grades K - 3 listen and discuss Aboriginal Dreaming tales responding with artistic interpretations. Grades 4 - 6 Sketch ideas as they view and listen to video. Create project using personal images imitating the traditions of Aboriginal art. IV. Identify elements of Aboriginal philosophies that agree with their own ideas Evaluate personal art work in line with the grade focus using supporting examples PROCEDURE: The teacher will: 1. Motivate students by playing a CD of Australian digeradoo music. Initiate discussion focusing on Australia. 2. Have children relate prior knowledge, correcting cultural misconceptions or bigotry 3. Call child to map to locate Australia. 4. Show photos of Australia’s land, plants and animals. Discuss. Share brief history of Australia introducing Aboriginal people. Discuss similarities/differences between native Australian people and the Native Americans. Introduce appropriate vocabulary, note sheets 5. Show reproductions of cultural Aboriginal art. Ask students for descriptive words 6. Compare artwork, symbolism, media to other cultures artwork with which they are familiar such as Native American. 7. Grades K-3: Discuss folktales, read Rainbow Bird and discuss story. Grade 1: Tell the Kangaroo Dreaming Story using a drawn kangaroo to illus. the different stages of the animal. Grades 4-6: show exerpts of video relating to the particular work they will study. 8. Guide students to plan, create and revise an art work, then reflect on it as a successful piece of art.
