At Benjamin Franklin School our students are encouraged to discover, appreciate and interpret the art of many cultures and time periods. Our curriculum is aligned with the new Cleveland Municipal School District Standards, the Ohio Department of Education's Visual Art Standards and the National Standards for Visual Arts.
Students work with a variety of media, developing or reinforcing artistic skills. Inspiration comes from a variety of sources such as prints, slides, books, people and institutions, including our own, renowned Cleveland Museum of Art.
Students are graded on the following:
Time Management: readiness for class, use of time and materials, work attitudes, effort and consideration of others
Group Discussion: participation and sharing of ideas, suggestions and reflections on art work
Quizzes, Tests, Assignments: grade appropriate
Art Work: based on elements, principles discussed in class
Evaluation is continuous. It is informal as well as formal. Students will be encouraged to reflect upon their own work. They will begin to assemble a digital portfolio in Grade 7.
YAM, Youth Art Month, is celebrated each year in March.
This year, TEN students from grades one, three, six, seven and eight, have been selected for special exhibitions at both the State Office Tower in Columbus and Case Western Reserve University.
Congratulations to those students and to all the talented children at Ben Franklin!
